DreamWorks Animation has acquired the Troll brand from the Dam Family and Dam Things of Denmark, according to Variety.  DreamWorks has had a film in development since 2010. DreamWorks will now handle the brand worldwide, except for Scandinavia, where Dam Things will retain licensing rights.

Dreamworks has hired Shawn Dennis, formerly CMO of American Girl, to run the Troll brand.  The plan is to relaunch the brand worldwide.  The brand was introduced in 1959, was huge in the 1960s, and had another run in the 1990s.

Dark Horse has been producing limited quantities of Troll dolls as a program to seed the market for the brand in advance of the film (see "Dark Horse 'Trolls' Seed Market").
