Verso Publishing announced it will release Che: A Graphic Biography by Spain Rodriguez in February. The book (120 pages, $16.95 MSRP) follows Che Guevara's life and experiences from his motorcycle trip through Latin America, through his rise to power under Castro, to his death in Bolivia in 1967.
Manuel 'Spain' Rodriguez has a long history as an underground cartoonist and, along with Robert Crumb, was an original member of Zap Comics. He is known for his political work, so focusing on a dynamic and iconic revolutionary like Guevara seems fitting.
Che was edited by Paul Buhle, a senior lecturer at Brown, who also co-edited Wobblies! A Graphic History of the Industrial Workers of the World with Nicole Schulman, which is available from Verso for $25 retail.
Wobblies! Features work from a number of artists such as Carlos Cortez (former editor of the Industrial Worker), Harvey Pekar (American Splendor), Peter Kuper (Mad's Spy vs. Spy), Sue Coe, Seth Tobocman, Chris Cardinale, Ryan Inzana, Spain Rodriguez, Trina Robbins, Sharon Rudahl, and artists for World War 3 Illustrated.
This October, Verso also plans to release Dead Children Playing: A Picture Book by Stanley Donwood and Dr. Tchock featuring the album artwork and previously unpublished paintings done for the band Radiohead. Donwood has been involved with all of Radiohead's artwork since 1995 and won a Grammy for best Packaging/Artwork for the Amnesiac special edition. Dead Children Playing will be an 80-page hardcover and will list for $15.95.
