The Golden Globe Awards presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association snubbed Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight by presenting the nearly billion dollar hit with just one nomination, an unavoidable supporting actor nod for the late Heath Ledger.  The HFPA has been criticized in the past for preferring celebrity-laden hits to more worthy art house fare, but this year the 81 members of HFPA managed to ignore not only The Dark Knight, but also Gus Van Sant’s Milk and Clint Eastwood’s Changeling, while it relegated Pixar’s Wall-E to the ranks of animated films by denying it a shot at “Best Picture.”

Once considered a laughing stock for giving Pia Ziadora a “Best Actress” award, the Golden Globes have been resurrected by television’s insatiable hunger for award shows and celebrities.  It should be interesting to see if this year’s idiosyncratic nominations have an effect on the Oscar nominations and the Academy Awards.
