Heath Ledger received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Dark Knight, the only major nomination for the highest grossing film of 2008. But TDK did well in nominations in other categories, and comic-based films as a whole had a very good year, with four, TDK, Iron Man, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Wanted, represented among the nominations. One category, sound editing, had three comic-based films nominated for the film industry’s highest award: TDK, Iron Man, and Wanted.

The three animated features nominated for Oscars are Bolt, King Fu Panda, and WALL-E. The two anime films submitted, Sky Crawlers and Sword of the Stranger (see “Fourteen Animated Oscar Submissions”) did not place.
Israeli animated film Waltz with Bashir, which has a soon-to-be-released graphic novel adaptation (see “Waltz with Bashir an Oscar Semifinalist”), was nominated for Best Foreign Film.
