Armie Hammer, who portrayed the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, might just snag his biggest role yet, the eponymous hero of Disney’s The Lone Ranger. Hammer has met with Lone Ranger director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), and according to The Hollywood Reporter, could star opposite Johnny Depp, who is attached to play Tonto in the contemporary adaptation of the 1930s radio western (see “Gore Verbinski to Direct The Lone Ranger”).
The new Lone Ranger film is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Disney and is considered a priority at the studio. If all goes as planned, shooting will begin on the film as soon as the apparently indefatigable Johnny Depp finishes his work on Dark Shadows.
The Lone Ranger is an iconic western series that began on radio and then had an extremely popular TV incarnation in the 1950s as well as occasional big screen outings. The property has spawned a number of comic book series, most recently one from Dynamite (see “Dynamite Lands The Lone Ranger”).
