Marvel Entertainment announced today that it has appointed Peter Phillips as Senior Vice President & General Manager, Digital Media Group. Phillips will work closely with Dan Buckley, Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. Phillips will be charged with building Marvel’s current efforts in digital publishing, social networking, and in its primary online presence marvel.com.
Phillips has considerable experience in dealing with digital media. He worked at Paramount Pictures from 1992-2000, was, as Senior Vice President, responsible for the continued growth and development of Weight Watchers International’s $200 million online division. He was also Vice President of Product Development at Fandango, Inc., and was part of the executive team that led the sale of the company to Comcast in 2007.
Phillips, who most recently worked for the software company LivePerson, remarked that Marvel had made considerable progress on its digital initiatives and the company was “ready to take it to the next level.”
Marvel has scheduled a “Marvel Digital: What’s Next?” for San Diego, and might be ready to announce some new initiatives. Newsarama reports that Marvel has recently registered a trademark for “Blip.com,” which it describes as an “Internet website portal featuring social networking opportunities, applications, computer games and links to other sites for the purpose of social networking.” Mark Zuckerberg had better watch out.
