It appears that Warner Bros. doesn’t feel that there is enough room on the big screen for two fantasy film franchises.  Was the studio holding Wendy and Richard Pini’s Elfquest property in reserve like a second string quarterback, just waiting on the sidelines in case Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, which had to survive the near demise of MGM, was derailed?  Well that certainly appears to be the way that Elfquest creator Wendy Pini sees it.

 

Writing on the Elfquest Facebook Page, Pini noted: “After close to four years of suspense—and longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support—the word has come down from Warner Bros.  And the word is ‘no.’  Their simple explanation is that they don’t want to compete with The Hobbit.  This was a possibility, among several, that we were prepared for, it is a relief, at last to know.”

 

Will the studio regain interest in Elfquest if Jackson’s two fantasy films are successful?  Perhaps, since excitement is definitely building for the December debut of the first of Jackson’s Hobbit films (see “The Hobbit Poster”), and nothing is “forever” in Hollywood, even a “no.”
