Sony Pictures has a live-action feature film reboot of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch property on the development fast track.  Writers Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Die in a Gunfight) are writing the screenplay for the reboot, which will take the property in an edgier direction.  Don Murphy and Susan Montford, who produced Real Steel, will produce the new Sabrina film along with Archie’s John Goldwater.  Mark Waters who directed the presentation that got Sony interested, will direct if scheduling permits.

According to Deadline, the new live-action film will “recast (Sabrina) as a superhero.  It will be an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man, about a young girl coming to terms with her powers.”  Sabrina’s talking black cat Salem evidently survived the superhero makeover and will have a presence in the new film.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch has rich history on the small screen, inspiring animated TV series that debuted in 1969, 1971, and 1999 as well as a popular sitcom featuring Melissa Joan Hart that lasted seven seasons (four on ABC and three on the WB) from 1996 to 2003.
