Michael Breakfield of Lone Star Comics in Arlington, Texas read Steve Bennett's recent column which made some observations on Hawkeye and the Black Widow in The Avengers movie (see "Confessions of a Comic Book Guy--Eulogy for a Very Special Agent") and had this to say.
Again, I normally agree with a lot of what the Comic Book Guy has to say but when he says in his column "No doubt it was fear of getting laughs that kept the movie from ever referring to Natasha Romanov and Clint Barton as "Black Widow" and "Hawkeye," not even once to establish those were their S.H.I.E.L.D. code names." and "Nobody ever mentions the elephant in the room, i.e., "what exactly is this guy (Hawkeye) doing here?"" I have to ask: Did you actually watch the movie?
In the very first scene featuring Natasha, her would be interrogator says "You are the famous Black Widow." As for why Hawkeye is there? They spend half the movie SHOWING the audience why he's there. He's a super badass that while under the thrall of Loki nearly dismantles the team and crashes the Helicarrier into the ocean.
