A new Veronica Mars movie has successfully blown through its $2 million Kickstarter funding goal (a record) in the first day. As of this writing, the project has raised $2.46 million from nearly 40,000 backers.
The show was canceled by the CW almost six years ago (see "CW Cancels 'Veronica Mars'"), and efforts to get a movie going through traditional channels were unsuccessful. A comic that followed the TV series in continuity (see "'Veronica Mars' Comic Still Possible") also fell through.
The Kickstarter project was posted by show creator Rob Thomas and series star Kristin Bell. Warners, which owns the property, agreed to cooperate if the funding goal was reached. The film is expected to go into production this summer and premiere in early 2014.
All 442 of the high-end backer slots (over $500) were gone by the end of the first day, with one $10,000 backer, three $8,000 backers, three at $6,500, and five at $5,000.
