Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that they’re planning a new Star Wars film every summer beginning in 2015 for at least five years, according to ComingSoon. The announcement, made at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, clarifies the schedule for the new trilogy and the stand-alone films.
The first of the new trilogy, Episode VII directed by J.J. Abrams (see "J.J. Abrams to Helm New 'Star Wars' Movie"), will be released in the summer of 2015. In the summer of 2016, the first of two stand-alone films (see "Stand-alone 'Star Wars' Films") will be released, followed by Episode VIII in 2017. Then another stand-alone film in 2018 and Episode IX in 2019.
