In the wake of its shutdown of LucasArts (see "Disney Shuts Down LucasArts"), Disney has now awarded a multi-year exclusive license to produce Star Wars videogames to Electronic Arts, the companies announced. The license covers Star Wars titles "for a core gaming audience" on "all interactive platforms."
Disney retained the rights to publish games in the mobile, social, tablet, and online game categories.
EA said its studios DICE and Visceral will join BioWare in developing for the Star Wars property.
The license with EA cements Disney's quick switch in strategy for Star Wars videogames: from the shutdown of LucasArts to a new licensee in barely a month.
Not clarified by the announcement were the status of the games LucasArts had in development at the time Disney shut it down, whether Disney will incorporate Star Wars characters into its collectible figure-videogame hybrid (see "Disney Launching Collectible Game Figures"), and whether games for the categories it retained will be licensed to other companies or developed in house.
