Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Heroes, Star Trek Voyager) and Michael Green (Green Lantern, Heroes, Smallville) will write the pilot and showrun the American Gods TV series (produced by FremantleMedia, see "'American Gods' Headed to TV") for Starz, the company announced Tuesday. The development is script-to-series, which means that if the network likes the pilot script, it will greenlight the series.
Neil Gaiman’s novel has sold kajillions of copies, won the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker Awards, and been translated into 30 languages. Gaiman approved of the team being assembled for the series. "What I love most about the team who I trust to take it out to the world, is that they are the same kind of fanatics that American Gods has attracted since the start," he said.
The show got close to production for a pay TV network back in 2011, when it was slated to be a six season series for HBO (see "'American Gods' Is Six Seasons"). Starz will retain the network pay TV and SVOD rights; FremantleMedia will distribute worldwide.
