Just like the movie, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 was hanging tough on the charts in September, and a new manga debuted strong.  The Bendis-penned Guardians of the Galaxy volume stayed in the BookScan Top 20 adult fiction graphic novels sold in the book channel for the month, although just barely, at #20.  Still, it was the only Marvel in the Top 20, so a significant title for the company.  The movie was #8 in the U.S. last weekend, almost two months after release (see "Star-Powered 'Equalizer' Tops Box Office").

The other big news for September was the appearance of Noragami, a new Kodansha manga title by Adachitoka, on the chart, debuting at #12.  The series is relatively new (there are four volumes out in Japan), but there is already an anime, and FUNimation is streaming it.  It’s the story of a Yato, a "stray god" who, without a shrine or worshippers, takes all kinds of jobs to raise money to build himself a temple.

But as for the rest of the list, September is not a big month for new graphic novel releases, and the Top 20 chart reflected that.  Long-running series dominated the top of the list, with The Walking Dead and Attack on Titan taking four of the top five slots, and Vertigo's Fables Vol. 20 the fifth.

Bryan Lee O'Malley's Seconds, in its third month on the chart, placed at #6, although the Barnes & Noble exclusive version dropped off.

Jules Feiffer’s Kill My Mother: A Graphic Novel, another new stand-alone release, stayed in the Top 20 (#15) for a second month.

Four Attack on Titan volumes were the biggest franchise in the Top 20.  There were only two The Walking Dead volumes, but that will undoubtedly change this month as the new season kicks off.  There were also only two Saga volumes, which has been consistently placing all three.  There were eight manga titles, a fairly typical showing.
