The Fox TV Network has ordered six more episodes of the Batman prequel series Gotham to push the total to a full 22-episode order. Gotham has been well-reviewed by the critics and has also been a major hit with audiences. The full season order became almost automatic after the premiere episode attracted 8 million viewers according to the overnight ratings, which measure how many people are watching the show at the time that it is broadcast.
But in this age of time-shifting DVRs the overnight ratings only tell part of the story. The live+7 ratings includes those who watch the show on a delayed basis via a DVR, and they are increasingly important. Last year Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. set a record when the +7 ratings boosted the series premiere’s total ratings by 2.4 points to 15.8 million (see "'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' at 15.8 Million").
According to Deadline the premiere episode of Gotham set a new record by boosting the show’s ratings by 2.7 points in the coveted 18-49 demographic, which translates to an 82% increase in the size of the audience, which swelled to 14 million for the seven-day period.
