Hasbro Studios announced plans for an animated feature based on My Little Pony for 2017, Variety is reporting. The film will be produced through Allspark Pictures, Hasbro’s new label which will self-finance or pair up with other companies to co-finance film projects. Hasbro Studios will produce and finance the My Little Pony film in house. It is already in discussions with studios to release the film "on the broadest possible number of screens," according to Stephen Davis, president of Hasbro Studios and global entertainment and licensing for Hasbro Inc.
Joe Ballarini (Dance of the Dead) will write the script. Megan McCarthy, showrunner for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, as well as writer on both My Little Pony: Equestria Girls (see "Bronies Get Ready") and My Little Pony: Equestria Girls--Rainbow Rocks, will exec produce.
Both Equestria Girls OAVs received limited theatrical releases before home video, through Screenvision and Shout! Factory, though the totals are not tallied like traditional theatrical releases.
The 1986 My Little Pony: The Movie, which stared Danny DeVito, Tony Randall, Rhea Perlman, and Cloris Leachman, grossed $5,958,456 and spent seven weeks in the theaters.
Hasbro’s first project under its Allspark label is the upcoming Jem and the Holograms feature co-produced by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions and co-financed by Universal (see "'Jem' Gets a Date").
