Scott Rosenberg's Platinum Studios announced that MGM has agreed to produce a television series for the Showtime cable network based on the award-winning series of Jeremiah graphic novels written and drawn by Belgian author Hermann Huppen.  J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, Rising Stars) wrote the pilot and will serve as executive producer for the series.   Scott Rosenberg and Ervin Rustemagic will also serve as producers on the series.  MGM, which has produced Stargate SG-1, The Outer Limits, and the highly anticipated Leap Years for Showtime, jumped at the chance to do Jeremiah after reading Straczynski's script for the pilot.

The series, which is set in a post apocalyptic future in which a virus has killed off the world's adult population, features heartthrob Luke Perry (Beverly Hills 90210) and Malcolm Jamal-Warner (The Cosby Show) as Jeremiah and his cynical sidekick Kurdy, who are among the oldest humans still standing in this disease-ravaged world.  MGM has authorized the production of 20 episodes of the series which is expected to debut in early 2002.

The Jeremiah books are not currently available in English, but if the television series takes off, it is likely that the series, which has been a strong seller in Europe for years. will find an American publisher.
