Fox has acquired the rights to reboot John Carpenter’s Escape from New York, and plans to develop a new film, according to Deadline.  John Carpenter, who directed the 1981 original, is attached as executive producer, and will have creative input into the film. The original film was set in a New York City that had been converted into a maximum security prison, and the reboot will presumably build on that concept as well.

The film rights have been through multiple hands, and films in development have blown up at least twice in the last few years.  A version starring Gerard Butler fell apart back in 2007 (see "'Escape from New York' Stalls"), and a version to be produced by Joel Silver was in development as recent as 2013 (see "Say It Isn't So Dept.:" 'Escape from New York' Trilogy").

The property’s still active in other parts of geek culture, though; BOOM! has a comic (see "'Escape from New York' Comic").
