Tiny Epic Galaxies is a science-fiction themed "4X" game (meaning "eXpand, eXplore, eXploit, and eXterminate") from designer Scott Almes (Kings of Air and Steam, Martian Dice). In the game, each player controls their own galaxy on a quest to dominate the universe. Mechanically, the action is controlled by dice-rolling, which determines the actions available to a player on his or her turn. The core of the strategy revolves around pre-programming the order of the dice on your turn.
The game itself is, as the name suggests, tiny. The box measures a mere 7" by 5", continuing the recent trend for small-sized "microgames" that offer mechanics and themes usually reserved for big box offerings.
The game includes 7 custom dice, 35 wooden player pieces, 6 player mats, and 48 game cards. The game is for 1 - 5 players, ages 14 and up, and plays in about 30 minutes. MSRP is $25.00.
Tiny Epic Galaxies is proving to be a successful follow-up for Almes, whose fantasy-themed 4X game, Tiny Epic Kingdoms released last year after a quarter million dollar Kickstarter (see "'King's Forge,' 'Tiny Epic Kingdoms,' and 'Alien Frontiers'"). The Galaxies Kickstarter raised a total of $411,693 from 12,458 backers ($33.05/backer average).
