Comic-Con News: At the San Diego Comic DC Collectibles revealed their 2016 lineup of action figures that includes new figures based on the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film, on the highly successful Flash and Arrow TV series, on the highly stylized Batman: The Animated Series, on the popular Batman: Arkham Knight video game, and, of great interest to comic book fans--figures based on the character designs of some of DC’s top artists including Lee Bermejo, Darwyn Cooke, and Greg Capullo.
The highly anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film directed by Zack Snyder, which is due in theaters on March 25, 2016, is represented by three figures in the 2016 DC Collectibles line including a Henry Cavil-like Superman plus two figures based on the Ben Affleck Batman, one of which shows the Dark Knight in full armored mode.The CW Network’s Flash was the most successful of a potent crop of new superhero-inspired TV series that debuted in 2014, so it is only right that the excellence of the show is reflected in new action figures for The Flash, Reverse Flash, and Heatwave. The CW’s Arrow series, which debuted in the fall of 2013 is represented by an Arrow Season 3 figure, plus a great Black Canary figure as well as one for the villain Malcolm Merlyn, who is a member of the League of Assassins and father of Tommy and Thea.
The stylized character designs of Batman: The Animated Series have long intrigued fans and this year’s figures based on the Bruce Timm-helmed cartoon series include Commissioner Gordon, Ra’s Al Ghul, Zatanna, plus Etrigan and Klarion. The not quite so stylized figures based on the animation from the Batman Arkham Knight video game from Rocksteady include Azrael, Professor Pyg, and Man-Bat.For comic book fans of particular artists, the DC Designer Series Action Figures, which are based on the distinctive character designs of certain artists. In 2016 the gritty art of Lee Bermejo provides the inspiration for very cool 3-D renderings of Batman, Superman, Lex Luthor and Green Lantern. In contrast the retro stylings of Darwyn Cooke harken back the “clean line” art of the 1920s and 30s, making his versions of Batman, Supergirl, Harley Quinn, and Adam Strange instantly recognizable. The same could be said for Greg Capullo’s superb versions of The Joker and Wonder Woman.
Also new for 2016 are the DC Icons 6” Action Figures of Firestorm, The Joker, and the John Stewart Green Lantern.
