Producer Roy Hill, who had a big hit with the LEGO Movie and is now turning to the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons feature (see "'D&D' Movie Set to Move Ahead"), revealed a lot about his plans for the film in an interview with Collider. Lee told the site that the planned film "will be a Guardians of the Galaxy-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe." Lee is clearly looking to differentiate the D&D movie from previous fantasy fare. "Because when you think of all the Hobbit movies and The Lord of the Rings, they have an earnestness to them, and to see something fun, a Raiders romp inside that world, I feel is something the audience has not seen before," he explained.
Wizards of the Coast is giving a lot of input on the script, which will incorporate both the source material, going back to D&D precursor Chainmail, and new elements created for the film, Lee said. WotC CEO Greg Leeds spoke of the importance of tying print product to what’s in the film in his interview with ICv2 last fall (see "Interview with Wizards of the Coast CEO Greg Leed").
The entire film will be set in the realm, with no travel back and forth between our world and the film setting. The Yawning Portal will be prominently featured, according to Lee, who promised "It’s going to be one of people’s favorite set pieces."
