General Mills and DC Comics have teamed up again, this time to bring exclusive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comic books to the breakfast table.
Beginning this month, specially-marked boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Trix and Golden Grahams will include one of four exclusive comic books. The specially-marked boxes will be available through April or while supplies last.
The comics are written by Jeff Parker, Christos Gage, Marguerite Bennett, and Joshua Williamson. Interior art is provided by Marcus To, Federico Dallocchio, Eduardo Pansica, RB Silva, Art Thibert, José Marzan Jr., Irma Kniivila, Jim Charalampidis, Jeromy Cox and Andrew Dalhouse. Covers are provided by Gary Frank and Rod Reiss.
The storylines focus on life lessons, including the importance of diverse opinions and what it truly means to be a hero. The books all have ties to the film in both overt and hidden ways. “All the comics that we’ve done to support Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were directly inspired by the film,” said Alex Antone, editor at DC Comics. “Even though plot details of the film are top secret, we worked closely with filmmakers to make sure our stories were consistent. While all major reveals are saved for the film, eagle-eyed readers may discover a few clues in the comics about what’s to come.”Here are the comics in the boxes:
- Issue 1: Playground Heroes by Jeff Parker
- Issue 2: Field Trip by Christos Gage
- Issue 3: Picture Proof by Marguerite Bennett
- Issue 4: Lights Out by Joshua Williamson
In addition to the comic books the cereal boxes will include a Blippar-activated augmented reality cell phone/ tablet game that allows fans to help Superman or Batman save the city.
DC partnered with General Mills for a similar promotion in 2014 (see "Comics in Cereal Return”).
