Comic-Con News: Dark Horse Comics has announced an agreement with videogame powerhouse Blizzard Entertainment that will allows the Oregon-based publisher to create a graphic novel as well as an art book based on the Overwatch, the hot new multi-player first-person shooter game that debuted in May on multiple platforms (PlayStation 4, X-Box and PC), earning near universal acclaim from the leading gaming magazines and $269 million in digital sales worldwide in May.

Dark Horse Comics has already produced a number of free 8-page digital comics for Blizzard that provide backstories for the game’s characters and explain the world that they live in, and DHC plans to produce more of these digital Overwatch offerings, but the agreement also includes an original hardcover Overwatch graphic novel, which is due in April of 2017 and will contain 100-pages of sequential art telling a story of the original Overwatch strike team and will be a brand new entry in the Overwatch canon.

Dark Horse will then follow up in the summer of 2017 by publishing the Art of Overwatch, a deluxe coffee table book collecting never-before-seen concept art from the white hot video game.  Dark Horse has scored some signal successes with its collections of video game art, especially The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, which has sold over half a million copies (see “Dark Horse Has the #1 Book in America”), and the publisher just announced that it shipped over 80 thousand copies of the World of Warcraft Chronicles, Vol. 1, which was published in March (see “World of Warcraft: Chronicle, Vol.1”).
