Deb Lucke’s acclaimed kids graphic novel The Lunch Witch has been acquired by Amblin Partners for a live-action film directed by Angry Birds helmer Clay Kaytis, according to Deadline.

The Lunch Witch, a 2015 release from Papercutz that was listed as one of the 10 best graphic novels of the year by School Library Journal (see "Top Graphic Novel Lists of 2015 Round-Up"), follows the misadventures of Grunhilda, the latest in a long line of witches, as she navigates a world that no longer believes in magic. Armed with her ancestors’ cauldron and spells, Grunhilda takes on the only job a witch with questionable cooking skills can hold: lunch lady.

Kaytis worked as an animator on Disney films, including Frozen, Tangled, and Wreck-It Ralph, before directing Angry Birds for Sony, which posted one of the strongest openings for an animated film from the studio (see “'Angry Birds' Hatch A Box Office Winner”).

The Lunch Witch will be Kaytis’ first live action film. Details on writer, cast, and filming schedule are pending.

A sequel to Lucke’s bestselling graphic novel, The Lunch Witch: Knee-Deep in Niceness, is scheduled for release on October 25 from Papercutz.
