The CW network has released a first photo of Green Arrow star Stephen Amell in his Green Arrow costume, which was designed by three-time Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood.  David Nutter is currently directing the Arrow pilot in Vancouver from a script by Andrew Kreisberg, Marc Guggenheim, and Greg Berlanti with a cast that includes Amell, Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland, Paul Blackthorne, Jamey Sheridan, David Ramsey, Colin Donnell, and Susanna Thompson (see “TV’s Green Arrow Finds His Black Canary”).

Nutter, who also directed the pilot for Smallville, talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the differences and similarities this time around: “When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. Arrow is a different show -- darker and harder-edged -- but it's the same core idea.  We're creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things.  Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.”

There is little doubt that the image that the CW released of the costumed Green Arrow is on the darker side, which renders many of the details of the new costume invisible.  Still the new duds, which appear to be some sort of green leather, appear to strike a nice balance between the Green Arrow’s classic comic garb, and the need to create something a little cooler for TV.
