The Rankin/Bass animated film The Last Unicorn, came out on DVD this week. Based on the fantasy novel by Peter S. Beagle, who also wrote the screenplay for this delightful film, The Last Unicorn has more heart and soul than almost any other American animated fantasy film of its era. Don't be put off by the lousy artwork on the DVD packaging; there are some amazing sequences in this film including the Red Bull's scenes and the tidal wave of charging unicorns. And, for anime fans, although this film was produced (and written) in the U.S., it was animated in Japan by Topcraft Studios, the company that was the predecessor of Studio Ghibli. If you haven't seen this film for awhile, check it out once again and note the great use of primary colors and the excellent character design -- elements that link it to the Ghibli classics of Miyazaki and Takahata.
