Mike Boze of HawgHead Comics in Fort Smith, Arizona comments on the troubles of Borders and ponders the ramifications of discounting at Hastings.

I read with interest the continuing problems with Borders Books.  Which brings up the subject of Hastings Entertainment.  I went to the local Hastings on Saturday to rent a DVD and noticed the comic book section.  Normally I do not walk through the comic books but something caught my eye and I had to stop.  There was a large sign over each set of racks that read, "BUY 2 COMIC BOOKS AND GET ONE FREE."  As retailers we know what our cost is and what our profit margin is.

I question if this is really an effective tool to grow the market.  From stores like Borders can we not ask if deep discounts ever provide growth?
