Tom McCarthy has been signed to write a new script to adapt Doug TenNapel’s Tommysaurus Rex for the screen, according to Hollywood Reporter.  McCarthy wrote the story for Up for Pixar, and wrote The Visitor and The Station Agent, two well-reviewed movies that he also directed.  He may also end up directing Tommysaurus Rex.

The property was originally acquired for $1 million by Universal (see "Universal Options 'Tommysaurus Rex'"), but several drafts went nowhere.  The project ended up in turnaround, where it was picked up by Mary Parent, a Universal executive when it acquired the rights.  Parent and Cale Boyter are now producing, and the film is back at Universal.

The comic was originally published by Image; a new edition of the graphic novel was released by Scholastic’s Graphix imprint last year.
