Space Dandy: Galactic Deck-Building Game, based on the comedic space opera anime directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo), will be Seven Seas Games’ first release, in late 2015. The project is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.
Space Dandy: Galactic Deck-Building Game, designed by Clay Gardner (OVA: The RPG, Those Pesky Humans), is described as "in the same vein" as Dominion and Ascension. Players take the role of Dandy (who used Aloha Oe’s broken warp drive to create multiple alternate universe copies of everyone), and build their crew, acquire new abilities, hinder opponents, and ultimately register aliens for Woolong currency to make enough cash to win the game.
Currently, the base game box contains over 200 cards, 40 star tokens, four player boards, one "orbit" board, and a full-color rulebook. "The MSRP will be somewhere between $40 and $50, depending on if we're able to upgrade the components of the game based on Kickstarter performance," Seven Seas President Jason DeAngelis told ICv2 via email.
A trade release is planned, but distribution has to be arranged. "We're currently in talks with various distributors and are still looking for the best distribution partner for our games," De Angelis said. "We expect to determine which distributor to go with by the end of April, and will likely have a retail release by the end of 2015." De Angelis clarified that Seven Seas’ book distribution “will remain with Macmillan."
The game will be shown off at Gen Con, with backer fulfillment planned for September.
Asked whether the company was planning organized play, DeAngelis responded, "We're in the process of building a fan support program for organized play."
Seven Seas Games is the new board and card game imprint of manga publisher Seven Seas Entertainment (see "Seven Seas Launching Games Division"), and DeAngelis emphasized that Space Dandy is only the beginning. "Retailers should know that we have a robust games program planned," he said. "Besides Space Dandy, we've already acquired several other licenses based on hit anime properties that we're actively developing into games. We're also currently designing an exciting original IP that melds the best of euro gaming with an anime aesthetic."
The Space Dandy anime stars alien hunter Dandy, his robot QT, and cat-like alien Meow in misadventures seeking rare aliens. The series appears on Adult Swim’s Toonami block, and the first season was just released on home video (see "DVD Round-Up: 'MockingJay, Part 1,' 'Adventure Time,' 'Foxcatcher,' & 'Space Dandy'").
