Sony took to Twitter today to announce an animated feature film featuring Miles Morales, the Black Hispanic teenager who first took on the mantle of Spider-Man in Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli’s Ultimate Comics: Fallout #4 following the death of Peter Parker.
The film, directed by Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince, Puss in Boots) and Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians), is due in theaters on December 21, 2018 (see “Best in Shows--Q4 2018”).
Sony originally announced an animated feature starring the friendly neighborhood webslinger in 2015 (see “Sony Plans Animated 'Spider-Man' Feature”), with a July 2018 release date and Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller attached to write.
Fans have long called for a Morales-centric Spider-Man movie, starting a social media campaign in 2010 to cast Glover in the role for The Amazing Spider-Man, but the reboot ultimately centered on Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. Glover went on to voice Morales in the Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man television series.
Glover has been cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming (see “Late June Geek Movie Casting Update”), another reboot focused on Peter Parker, this time played by Tom Holland. Glover’s role in Homecoming is as yet unspecified, but Glover is too old to play a live-action Morales. Many have speculated that Glover is playing a villain in the film.
While Sony didn’t specify any cast members in their Twitter announcements today, fans may finally get their wish for a Miles Morales Spider-Man movie starring Glover, just not the version they originally clamored for six years ago.
