With Comic-Con International in San Diego behind us, the comics industry has headed off for its traditional August vacation—but not everyone is on the beach.  IDW Publishing, Abrams Books, and BOOM! Studios are all queuing up some children's properties to bring us from the end of summer to the holiday season.

Jem and the Anthology: IDW  Publishing will launch Jem and the Holograms: Dimensions, an anthology series with two self-contained stories in each issue, in November, once the current Jem Infinite/Misfits Infinite crossover wraps up (see "Kids Comics Roundup: 'Check Please' Gets a Publisher; New 'Diesel'").  The new series will feature a rotating roster of artists and writers; the first issue will include a story by Kate Leth (Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat) and Tana Ford (Silk) and another written and illustrated by longtime Jem artist Sophie Campbell; writer Kelly Thompson is expected to contribute to future issues as well.

Shadows and SpongeBob:  Abrams Books has a trio of graphic novels lined up for this fall.  Suee and the Shadow is a spooky story of a 12-year-old girl who transfers to a new school and finds her classmates mysteriously turning into zombie-like Zeroes—and her shadow getting more and more powerful at the same time.  The book is due out on September 19 (240 pages, full color, ages 9-12, MSRP $21.99 hardcover/$12.99 softcover).

In Dinosaur Empire (Earth Before Us #1), fifth-grader Ronnie learns about dinosaurs when his paleontologist neighbor takes him on a magical dinosaur tour through time and space stopping off in the three major periods of dinosaur history to check out the habits of the different species.  This book came out on August 1. (128 pages, full color, ages 8-12, MSRP $15.95, hardcover).

And finally, Abrams pulls out the stops for SpongeBob Comics: Treasure Chest, a deluxe hardcover collection of stories from the SpongeBob comic book series, including a facsimile of the very first issue.  Abrams has already published several paperback collections (see "Abrams Gets 'SpongeBob'"), but this slipcased edition, while still kid-friendly, will also engage more serious collectors, with its larger trim size and bonus pin-up art by Sergio Aragones, Skottie Young, James Kochalka, and other comics luminaries.  The treasury hits the beach on October 3 (208 pages, full color, all ages, MSRP $29.95, hardcover).

BOOM! Fantasies: BOOM! Studios has two collected editions of fantasy-themed comics lined up for October. Brave Chef Brianna is the story of a girl who wants to start her own restaurant—but the only place she can afford to rent space is Monster City, where she must deal with real monsters.  The comic has a similar vibe to Adventure Time and Steven Universe but with a slightly simpler art style (112 pages, full color, ages 8 and up, MSRP $14.99, softcover).

Stardust Kid, published under the Archaia imprint, is a new spin on a classic fantasy plot, a boy who is transported to a magical land and must get back again.  The creative team is J. M. DeMatteis (Spider-Man: Kraven’s Last Hunt) and Mike Ploog (The Spirit).  A paperback edition was published in 2008 but now Archaia is bringing it back in hardcover with new behind-the-scenes extras. (160 pages, ages 9-12, MSRP $24.99, hardcover).
