Director Ridley Scott recently spoke on the future of the Alien franchise. The ever-busy director has more planned, but he’s moving away from the “alien stuff” according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Scott tells EW, “But I think if you go again you need to start finding another solution that’s more interesting. I think AI is becoming much more dangerous and therefore more interesting.”

Artificial intelligence has certainly played a role in the franchise so far, with Ian Holm, Lance Henrickson, and Michael Fassbender playing androids in various outings. Scott’s last take on the franchise, Alien: Covenant, in particular explored the dangers of AI with the artificial persons played by Fassbender (see “'Alien: Covenant' Invites Audience to Meet Walter in New Trailer”). Fassbender’s performance as the loyal Walter and morally corrupt David was one of the most widely praised aspects of the film, which otherwise suffered from franchise fatigue despite relatively solid critical reviews (see “Franchise Fatigue? 'Alien: Covenant' Barely Tops 'Guardians'”).
