The CW announced their fall lineup and revealed that Batwoman will make her live-action premiere in the next crossover event involving its DC Entertainment shows. Arrow star Stephen Amell announced the appearance during CW’s upfront presentation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For the last few years, CW has had a multi-part crossover among the shows in the so-called Arrowverse: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. (Black Lightning is not part of the same continuity.) Batwoman’s inclusion in the event also means that Gotham City will be incorporated into the Arrowverse for the first time (but don’t expect a crossover with Fox’s Gotham anytime soon).

Batwoman was created by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff, making her first comics appearance in 1956. Originally introduced as a romantic partner for Batman, the character was deemed nonessential and dropped from the DC roster a few years later and didn’t appear again regularly until 2006, when she was part of the 52 event. The current incarnation of Batwoman, Kate Kane, has held the mantle of Batman and headlined multiple solo series. The current series is written by Marguerite Bennett (DC Comics Bombshells, Batgirl) (see “Marguerite Bennett Writing New Ongoing 'Batwoman' Series”). Notably, Batwoman is one of the highest-profile LGBTQ characters in DC’s lineup.
