The "Weis and Hickman vs. WotC Saga" has come to close, and Classic Dragonlance fans will reap the rewards in the form of three novels published by Del Rey Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Back in October, Weis and Hickman sued WotC for allegedly terminating their agreement to produce new Dragonlance books without cause (see "Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman Sue Wizards of the Coast Over Cancelled 'Dragonlance' Books"). The parties negotiated, and toward the end of 2020, Weis revealed that she had "exciting news in the weeks to come" (see "Rolling for Initiative -- Another Look at the 'Dragonlance' Lawsuit"), which was the first indicator that the parties may have settled the dispute. The negotiations did, in fact, lead to a new agreement between the parties, and a new Classic Dragonlance trilogy was then set to move forward.
The first of the three books does not have an official release date (as of the publication of this article), but Weis and Hickman anticipate that it will arrive later in 2021. The new trilogy will bring back beloved characters and add a new protagonist to the mix. Weis commented on the deal:
"Dragonlance is what brought Tracey and I together so many years ago," said Weis. " We're thrilled to be able to do this for existing lovers of Krynn while bringing our beloved characters to a new generation of readers."
Weis and Hickman will be releasing more information in the coming months about Classic Dragonlance and other projects.
