Skybound Entertainment and the Poland-based children’s book publisher Ameet have formed a partnership to publish Lego-branded comics, starting in 2022. The comics will be published by Image Comics and Skybound, and the first titles will be announced later this year.
The new comics will be the first Lego branded comics to appear in over five years. Papercutz had the license from 2008 to 2016 and published graphic novels that tied into Lego brands including Bionicle, Ninjago, and Legends of Chima (see “Bionicle Graphic Novels”). This was a lucrative franchise for them: Papercutz sold 2 million copies of the Ninjago graphic novels between 2011 and March 2014. However, they lost the license to Little, Brown in 2015 (see “Papercutz Loses Lego License to Little, Brown”). Little Brown does not appear to have published any Lego graphic novels after 2016.
Ameet has been Lego’s publishing licensee since 2005. Skybound Entertainment is an independent publisher under the Image Comics umbrella; its catalog includes Invincible and The Walking Dead. As most of Image’s titles are creator-owned, the Lego comics will be a departure for them.
