Matt Bors, who recently stepped down from an 18-year career as a political cartoonist, and filmmaker Ben Clarkson, whose work has been featured on Adult Swim and Vice Noisey, are working together on their first comic series, Justice Warriors, to be published by Ahoy Comics. The six-issue limited series is a parody of police stories that follows two patrolmen, a veteran and a rookie; the veteran cop lost his partner when he was run over by a self-driving bus and is obsessed with revenge. Together they patrol Bubble City, a perfect community, and the Uninhabited Zone, the crowded slums that surround it. In a statement accompanying the announcement, Bors described the comic as “a violent satire of police, inequality, and celebrity, but mostly, it’s about why nothing changes and how almost no one is a good guy.”
This is the first comic for Clarkson and the first comic series for Bors. The two are writing and laying out the series together; Bors will do the lettering and Clarkson the line art, with coloring by Felipe Sobriero. Justice Warriors will launch on June 8, and the first issue will have a main cover by Clarkson and a variant cover by Bors.
Bors was a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and the website he edited, The Nib, won the 2020 Harvey Award for best digital comic (see “Gene Luen Yang Wins Two Harvey Awards”).
