Around Christmas time, shoppers often seek last minute, inexpensive gifts for white elephant events, office parties, or just simply to stuff kids' stockings. Retailers usually benefit from investing some time into curating gift items with these price points, as they often lead to impulse buys and quick sales.
In the games space, gifts that are $20 or cheaper have been kind of a trend all year long, according to some of ICv2's recent retailer interviews. Consumers have been opting to move away from buying more expensive and intricate Eurogames, and have been purchasing less expensive dice and card game purchases that are quick-to-play and easy fun. This trend was most apparent at mass retail where Big Box retailers have been slowly but surely committing less and less shelf space towards mid- to high-priced board games, and dedicating more space to lighter weight card and party games (see "PRO: Channel Check: Walmart Supercenter").
As usual, ICv2 has got FLGS retailers covered this year. The gallery below features a curated list of games and other items that are under $20, and make excellent options to display near the cash wrap and checkout.
