Magma Comix has launched a new anthology to raise money for Maui residents affected by the wildfires that devastated the island in August 2023.
Maui Strong collects adaptations of traditional Hawaiian stories, called mo‘olelo, by Hawaiian artists and writers, including Tom Bacon, Mark Gould, Blaze Hoʻomakoa, Brooke Hutchins, Jillian Ikehara. Nāinoa Kahiona, D.J. Keawekane, Aaron Nakahara, Kel Nuttall, Carl Shinyama, Joshua Sky, Chase Tokutaro, and Kanila Tripp. Money from purchases and funds raised on Zoop will go to Maui Rapid Response, which provides direct aid to the people affected by the fires. The crowdfunding campaign, which includes a retailer tier, kicked off at Maui Comic Con last weekend and will continue until early January 2024. Plans call for the rewards to be delivered in April 2024.
“When the news of the wildfire first broke, I was speaking with Maui native Joshua Sky about making comics,” said Denton J. Tipton, Founder and CEO of Magma Comix, in a statement accompanying the announcement. “When the extent of the devastation was more clearly revealed, we began discussing ways that we could possibly help, and soon we were again talking about making comics. Joshua connected me with the community in Maui to learn how best to bring some relief to the people affected, and Maui Strong was born out of that conversation.”
Magma Comix, which was originally founded as an imprint of Heavy Metal, relaunched as an independent publisher in July (see “Magma Comix Returns as Independent Publisher”).
