Dorkin created the concept, about a group of pets who investigate supernatural occurrences in their suburban neighborhood, as a short story for the Dark Horse Book of Hauntings and then went on to develop the idea further with Thompson into a comic series. Benjamin Dewey joined the team as the artist for Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men (see "Evan Dorkin Brings Back 'Beasts of Burden'") and currently alternates with Thompson as the artist; writers Sarah Dyer and Mike Mignola have also contributed to the series, which has won nine Eisner Awards.
