Devir Games was one of the companies with the biggest buzzes for board games this year at Gen Con, so ICv2 stopped by their demo room to see what the fuss was all about.
The most talked about original IP board game on the floor this year was Rock Hard: 1977 (see "Review: 'Rock Hard: 1977' (Board Game)"). For those unfamiliar with this new release, it was designed by The Runaways' bass player Jackie Fox and essentially simulates the business of being a Rock Star on the road in the 70s. It utilizes worker placement and set collection mechanics to get a band through booking gigs, interviews, hanging out at clubs, and more. At Gen Con 2024, Jackie Fox was even on site to sign some of the first copies of this game to hit the streets. However, Devir was selling out of this game pretty much daily, so many fans had to wait to buy their copy at a FLGS.
Aside from the obvious winner, Devir also released Cities at Gen Con 2024. This city builder was designed by Steve Finn and Phil Walker-Harding, and sends players on a mission to renovate a neighborhood (see "'Cities'"). Devir's play area also featured earlier 2024 releases, such as Sand (see "'Sand'") and Salton Sea (see "'Salton Sea'").
