Following its success with the ThunderCats comics based on the 1980s animated series, Dynamite Entertainment is launching a new comic, SilverHawks, which is based on the sci-fi themed followup to ThunderCats and marks the start of a new umbrella franchise that will include both series and possibly more.
The animated SilverHawks series was launched in 1986 as a followup to ThunderCats and features metal-enhanced heroes fighting in outer space. Ed Brisson will be the writer for Dynamite’s SilverHawks comic, working with artist George Kambadais. The series will delve into the backstory of the characters and expand the world of the series while building toward a larger story of a cosmic battle. The first issue will be released in January 2025 with covers by Lucio Parrillo, Jae Lee, James Stokoe, ThunderCats writer Declan Shalvey, Geraldo Borges, and Manix.
In announcing the new series, Dynamite stated that they are officially incorporating a family of titles that will include ThunderCats, SilverHawks, as well as spinoffs and potentially other titles as well.
Dynamite announced a licensing deal with ThunderCats and SilverHawks parent company WB Discovery in 2023 (see “Dynamite to Publish Comics Tied to Warner Bros. Animated Series”). Their first release under the license was ThunderCats, which launched with a splash when initial orders for the first issue reached 170,000 (see “Orders Hit 170K for ‘Thundercats’ #1”). That first issue was the top-selling comic in the history of the company, and Dynamite has since announced several spinoffs, including ThunderCats: Cheetara, which launched in July 2024 (see “Preview: ‘Thundercats: Cheetara’ #1”) and Thundercats: Apex, a one-shot by Brisson and Rapha Lobosco that will be released in December 2024.
