Fantagraphics Books and Zoop are partnering on a complete collection of Don Simpson’s classic superhero parody Megaton Man. The Complete Megaton Man Universe Volume One will be a 608-page book that includes all issues, spin-offs, and other stories published from 1983 to 1990, along with unpublished art, an introduction by Bill Morrison, a foreword by Chris Ecker, and an afterword by Simpson himself. The crowdfunding campaign is for a deluxe hardcover edition that will be exclusive to Zoop, and the retailer tier offers three copies for $95. The campaign has already raised over $12,000 from 104 supporters, surpassing its initial goal of $7,500, and the books are expected to ship in May 2025.
Fantagraphics Underground (FU Press) will publish a basic trade edition, which will be solicited in spring 2025.
Megaton Man, written and drawn by Simpson, was first published by Kitchen Sink Press in 1984 and ran for ten issues, followed by The Return of Megaton Man and assorted one-shots. The character later joined the cast of Bizarre Heroes, published by Simpson’s own Fiasco Press; that series ran for 17 issues from 1990 to 1999. Image Comics also published several Megaton Man titles in the 1990s, and some episodes have been posted online.
In 2004, the publisher iBooks (not to be confused with the Apple products of the same name) announced a Megaton Man collection timed to coincide with the superhero parody movie The Incredibles (see “iBooks Plans Megaton Man Collection”).
