Media Rights Capital, the source of the financing for Ted (2012) and the forthcoming Elysium (2013), may rescue The Dark Tower from development hell, according to Deadline Hollywood. This announcement follows on the heels of Warner Bros. dropping the ambitious project (see "'Dark Tower' Dead"), which will consist of three feature films and two TV miniseries.
While all the details have yet to emerge, one thing is clear: MRC is definitely interested in The Dark Tower, Stephen King’s epic, nine-volume, multi-genre series that chronicles the adventures of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger who must travel a post-apocalyptic landscape on a magical quest for the titular tower.
Akiva Goldsman adapted The Dark Tower for the screen, with King, Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, and Ron Howard set to produce. Howard, who wants Russell Crowe to portray Deschain (see "Russell Crowe to Replace Javier Bardem in 'Dark Tower'?"), is also on board to direct.
Prior to Warner Bros. backing out, Universal dropped the project (see"Universal Abandons 'The Dark Tower''"). With MRC, Dark Tower fans can only hope that the third time’s the charm.
