Paul Feig, the director of Bridesmaids and the driving force behind the cult hit TV series Freaks & Geeks, is planning to reboot Ghostbusters with a female-led cast of specter chasers, but he remains open to possible cameos by the original Ghostbusters cast members. The long-gestating sequel/reboot of Ghostbusters has foundered for years because key cast members (especially Bill Murray) balked at revisiting the franchise. At last the project has developed momentum once again with Feig’s plan to recast the film with funny women in key roles, though Feig told EW, "For me there’s so many ways I can go with this because there are so many funny women that it’s going to be the hardest thing to narrow down is who to put in."
Yesterday Feig tweeted that he was working on the project with Katie Dippold, who co-wrote the Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy comedy The Heat, and that the new Ghostbusters will be a female-centric film, tweeting "Yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who am going to call." Since Melissa McCarthy starred in both Bridesmaids and The Heat, it would surprise no one if the comedienne will be sucking up ectoplasm in the Ghostbusters reboot.
However Feig indicated to EW that he was open to cameos from the original Ghostbusters cast: "Well, I mean those guys are my comedy heroes, so as far as I am concerned, anybody wants to come back, I welcome it with open arms. It would just be different roles now, but it would be fun to figure out how to do that."
The original 1984 Ghostbusters movie returned to 700 theaters over the Labor Day Weekend to celebrate the film’s 30th Anniversary (see "'Ghostbusters' Theatrical Re-Release").
