Dollar sales on comics were flat in July, with a barely perceptible .2% increase over-all as the result of a 1% increase in graphic novel sales. The market improved by even that amount only because of an increase in the average cover price of comics from $2.80 to $2.91 per comic; piece sales were down (see 'Top Comic Sales Drop in July').
Sales were much more concentrated this year. Dollars were up 27% in the top ten comics in 2004, again driven largely by cover prices. All but one of the top ten comics in 2003 were $2.25, while the top five comics in 2004 were all $2.50 or more.
July was the first month since we once again began doing year over year comparisons this year that showed a drop in sales compared to 2003.
