Paramount has moved the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie, which was originally scheduled to debut on Christmas Day, to May 8th, 2009. Typically a movie is pushed back because of script or technical difficulties that will take time to fix, but this move is likely due to the writers' strike and the resulting dearth of major films with blockbuster potential to release during the prime late spring/early summer season. Paramount insists that the Star Trek film is on schedule and could have opened at Christmas, but is being moved because it has real 'tentpole' potential.
To fill the hole in its holiday schedule created by Star Trek's warp speed departure Paramount is moving David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, from November 26th to December 19th.
As far as 2009 is concerned at least the early portion of the summer season appears to be filling up quickly. Fox's X-Men Origin: Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman opens on May 1st, and Sony's sequel to The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, is slated to debut on May 15th.
