In July Papercutz, an imprint of NBM Publishing, will release the first two graphic novels in a series based on the popular animated series, Totally Spies, which is seen on the Cartoon Network. The full color 96-page manga-style graphic novels will be available in both paperback ($7.95) and hardcover ($12.95) editions. The Totally Spies cartoon series is one of the most popular cable cartoon series targeted at the young (and 'tween') female demographic. Tokyopop's series of Totally Spies Cine-Manga have sold over 200,000 copies (see 'Totally Spies Cine-Manga Boffo'), and Papercutz' Totally Spies series is likely to follow the successful pattern established by its Nancy Drew series of graphic novels (see 'Nancy Drew Sells Out').
The first volume in the Totally Spies original graphic novel series is called The O.P. and it takes the girls to a seemingly idyllic gated coastal California town called Ocean Palisades (and don't for a minute think that the readers won't get the reference to the popular teen TV series). In the second book in the series, I Hate the 80s, Boogie Gus is trying to turn Beverly Hills into the ultimate '1980s paradise' (isn't that an oxymoron?).
