Chain media retailer Trans World Entertainment reported declining sales and growing losses largely stemming from plummeting music sales, down 19% from a year ago. Same store DVD sales were up 7 %, but that wasn't enough to keep the retail chain from posting a loss of $10.1 million for the quarter (compared with a loss of $7.7 million during the same period last year). DVD sales represented 37% of the company's revenue up from 32% last year, while music sales declined to 43% from 51% last year.
With the number of f.y.e. and Suncoast stores down 12%, overall TWE revenues declined from $298.3 million in the same quarter last year to $267.3 million during the most recent quarter that ended on August 4th. The number of stores in the Trans World chain declined from 1091 last year to 963, and the company plans to close 45-50 stores by the end the year.
