The first looks at the toys based on the upcoming J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie were released last week to varying response.  The Playmates toys were previewed by USA Today, with a generally conventional approach to the property, featuring figures, roleplaying toys (phaser, communicator, tricorder), ships, and playsets.  The Playmate Star Trek toys are due to street April 19th.

 

The Star Trek Barbie dolls, on the other hand, elicited cringes from some, primarily because the target market seems so different from the hard core fan audience that’s been anxiously awaiting the film.  The Star Trek Barbies are due out April 20th.

 

The Star Trek film opens the second weekend of the summer film season, on May 8th (see “Best in Shows 2009, Part 1”).
