Barnes & Noble reported that sales declined 4% versus the previous year in Q1, an improvement over the 6% decline in Q4. Store sales dropped 3.5%, with same store sales down 5.7%. The same store sales decline was better than the guidance of a 6-9% decline. Website sales were down 7%.
Guidance for same store sales for Q2 was raised to a decline of 5% to 7%.
Q1 losses were $2.7 million, less than half the anticipated loss. Based on the better than expected Q1 results, full year guidance was raised. Same store sales for the full year are expected to decline 3-5%.
